The mechanisms of action of antimicrobial peptides have been studied in great detail. However, only several natural antimicrobial pore forming peptides are currently approved now for medical use. Efforts of researchers are focused on isolation, developing of new antimicrobial peptides, reducing toxicity and increasing their activity. We studied several natural pore forming peptides as a group with a particular mechanism of action and considered their potential clinical applications. We showed new experimental approach for biochemical testing of perspective pharmaceuticals. This approach may be useful for their applications in addressing challenges associated with their potential toxicity.
