The emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance is a global problem and it is known that commensal bacteria such as Escherichia coli can act as reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes. The Turdus philomenos is the most common thrush in Portugal and has a considerable economic value as one of the most important game species that is hunted and eaten by humans. Susceptibility testing was performed in 90 E. coli isolates recovered from 154 wild thrushes (58.4%), and eighteen of them (24%) presented resistance to at least one of the following antimicrobial agents: amikacin; tobramycin; streptomycin; nalidixic acid; gentamicin; cefoxitin; aztreonam; sulfamethoxazole–trimethoprim; tetracycline; and chloramphenicol. Moreover, eighty-two of the E. coli isolates (91%) were classified into the phylogenetic group D and B2, and the remains isolates in phylogenetic groups A and B1. Despite the limited prevalence of antibiotic resistance among E. coli isolates, there is a public health concern due to the high incidence of isolates classified into the phylogroups usually associated to extra intestinal infections.
