Ginkgo biloba is considered as a living fossil, with a long history of use in traditional medicinal system for its extended benefits. The focus of our study was to evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of different extracts of EGb761, and their microemulsion formulation since antimicrobial activity of thermodynamically stable oil-in-water microemulsions have been reported for significant biocidal activity against various bacterial species. The antioxidant activity of various solvent extracts was determined by means of 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity. The obtained result of absorbance & percent inhibition showed decrease in the concentration of DPPH & H₂O₂ radicals due to scavenging potential of extract. The reducing power of extract was determined and compared with standard ascorbic acid; increased absorbance with increased concentration signified the increase in reducing power. In-vitro antibacterial activity of aqueous, methanol, ethanol, acetone, and chloroform extracts of EGb761, standardized extract of G. biloba and its microemulsion was assessed against seven strains Micrococcus luteus (MTCC 106), Staphylococcus saprophyticus (MTCC 6155), Bacillus subtilis (MTCC 1427), Pseudomonas fluorescens (MTCC 2421), Aspergillus parasiticus (MTCC 2797), Aspergillus niger, Penicillium funiculosum (MTCC 2552) employing disc-diffusion assay out of which G. biloba microemulsions exhibited maximum zone of inhibition against M. luteus (25± 2 mm) followed by S. saprophtyicus (23±2 mm). These finding have suggested the better efficacies of microemulsions due to enhanced stability of active constituents responsible for imparting these pharmacological properties.
