Eyes of diabetic patients were analysed for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and presumptive isolates were identified by morphological, cultural and biochemical tests and confirmed by the VITEK system (BioMerieux). Automated EcoRI Ribotyping was performed with a RiboPrinter® Microbial CharacterizationSystem (Dupont Qualicon). The resistance of the isolates to 10 different antibiotics which are used as ophthalmic drop was determined by the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion test. The isolates were evaluated for biofilm production according to a modified microtiter plate method. Slime production in S. aureus strains was determined by cultivation on Congo Red Agar plates. Among the 50 isolates of Staphylococcus spp., 13 isolates were S. aureus. Nine of these isolates were determined as resistance to methicillin. The most effective antimicrobial agent was Lomefloxacin. S. aureus strains were biofilm procuders. Antibiotic multi-resistance and strong biofilm production abilities are important equipments of S. aureus to colonize on intraocular lens materials. Intraocular lens materials are essential for cataract surgery, which is most performed surgery all over the world.
