Existing utilization technologies, including chlorination, treatment by UV radiation, ozonation, etc., cause disinfection in the water distribution piping, but bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Vibrio cholerae, Yersinia or Legionella rebuild their colonies on the internal pipe walls and constitute a very dangerous source of epidemiological risk. Attempting to answer the increasing problem of the lack of drinking and potable water fulfilling criteria of the EU and WHO, and the high cost of utilization, we began searching for new technologies with bacteriophages and biopolymers (based on chitin and chitosan). Each of these technologies will be useful in the specific field of water protection, but a combination of both should lead to new methods and products fulfilling required standards and decreasing the cost of water utilization. Up till now, in Poland we have observed in part of the collective and individual water intake bacteria such as E. coli, Enterococcus and Yersinia. The Laboratory of Bacteriophages of The Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy, Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław (IIET) has one of the greatest collections of bacteriophages in Europe, including phages specific for those pathogens which may be useful for microbiological water treatment.
