Current studies showed the comparative analysis of the characteristics of chitosan extracted from soil fungal isolates (Aspergillus sp.). Comparative studies were performed using submerged and solid state fermentation studies to optimize bioprocess parameters (using statistical design approach) for enhancing yield of recoverable fungal chitosan. Downstream processing was optimized and purity of chitosan was analysed using FTIR. Thermal stability data revealed glass transition temperature of the fungal chitosan to be around 85 °C (ΔH=952.52 J/g). Fungal chitosan was moulded to cylindrical shaped carrier material and was used for the in-vitro propagation studies using different cell lines. Cell growth was analysed using MTT assay and biocompatibility was confirmed using DNA fragmentation studies. Such studies paved the way for use of fungal chitosan as a suitable alternative carrier material for different cells and propose the suitability of the biopolymer as scaffold material for therapeutic applications. We have envisaged the possible biorefinery development by using the fungal biomass remained after metabolite (enzyme) extraction as a source of chitin/chitosan for medical applications.
