Resistances to beta-lactam antibiotics (amoxicillin/clavulanic, ampicillin, cefotaxime and ceftazidime) were determined in enterobacteria isolates from fresh vegetables (n: 150) marketed in Valencia city. A total of 118 isolates were obtained, belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family (Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Escherichia, Hafnia, Klebsiella, Kluyvera, Pantoea, Serratia). Most isolates were resistant to amoxicillin/ clavulanic (86), ampicillin (89) or both (71); resistances to cefotaxime (2) or ceftazidime (1) were rare. One isolate (Enterobacter cloacae) was resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanic, ampicillin and cefotaxime), and another one (C. freundii) to all four antibiotics. Therefore, enterobacteria in fresh vegetables may serve as indicators of the spreading of resistances into the environment, as well as carriers of resistances to consumers. This points out the need for better methods to prevent contamination in the farms, including regulation concerning the use of antibiotics in livestock and agriculture, as well as sewage sludge and manure management, to improve the hygienic quality of fresh vegetables.
