Lameness is a crucial welfare issue in modern dairy industry. Limb disorders cause serious welfare, health and economic problems especially in loose housing of cattle. Changes in the cows’ activity, daily lying time and production figures have also been associated with several health problems such as lameness. The aim of this study was to design and construct a wireless 3-dimensional accelerometer system for measuring gait features and daily lying time in dairy cows. The data was logged to a computer in real time via a receiver. The measured data was used together with behavioural observations and lameness scoring to develop software for calculating lying time and deriving step features from the data. The measured lying time measurement proved to be 99% accurate as compared to behavioural observations. The device transmitted data reliably in barn conditions when attached to the cow’s hind leg. The sensor was used to measure the symmetry of gait for cows with different locomotion scores. We were able to see differences in the gait of lame and sound cows with the sensor and wavelet variance was used to associate the changes to various time scales. The next step is to collect long-term data with the device and analyze the changes of cows gait and lying patterns over time when lameness develops.
