The development of a new method for managing cow traffic flows within a pastoral dairy system using automatic milking technology is described. The system consists of one or more selection units (SU) located up to 480 m from the dairy housing the automatic milking systems (AMS). A SU comprises a small collection area entered through one-way gates and exited through a 3-way automatic drafting system. Access to pasture, water and the AMS act as incentives for cows to enter the SU. The SU are linked by raceways (either dual or single direction) that lead to the dairy. Each SU comprises a set of pneumatically powered drafting gates operated by an embedded controller (EC) with an associated RFID tag reader. Each EC communicates via radio or cable with a central PC based software program located at the dairy. The SU drafting gates direct the cow to the dairy or one of two grazing destinations, either the same area that she has just come from or a new grazing area. The cows are drafted to the dairy based on a calculated projection of her accumulated yield compared against a farmer-set target yield and a series of decision rules. Cows readily learned to use the system and were observed milking at every hour over 24 hours. Access to fresh pasture was a strong motivator for cow movement and minimal concentrate supplementation was necessary to induce cow movement. Milking frequency was able to be controlled via the system allowing a ratio of up to 90 cows per AMS. The method sucessfully demonstrated the integration of automatic milking into an extensive pastoral grazing system.
