The aim of the study was to develop, test and optimize a wide electronic pop hole (WEPH) based on high-frequency (HF-) technique (13.56 MHz) with at least 35 cm height and 40 cm width. Furthermore data about the ranging behaviour of a flock should be recorded and evaluated over an extended period of time. The identification reliability for a width of 70 cm was 97.6% (n=3,113 passages), respectively 99.3% for a width of 55 cm (n=606 passages) and 99.8% for a width of 40 cm (n=582 passages). The identification reliability for all tested widths of the WEPH was similar or higher compared to a narrow electronic pop hole (EPH). Only three hens of 181 hens that could be evaluated did not use the free-range area during the whole observation time span. After a fortnight the hens were well adapted to the WEPH and nearly 90% of the hens used the free-range area daily at least for one visit. On average each hen had 23.5 passages per day between the barn and the winter garden and the average hen stayed outside for nearly eight hours per day. Therefore the average staying time per visit was nearly 41 minutes. There were more hens using the free-range area with the WEPH compared to the EPH. The average amount of stays and staying time per hen and day in the winter garden with the WEPH were similar to the results with the EPH. The WEPH proofed to be a reliable system for the automatic evaluation of the ranging behaviour of laying hens. Therefore data for the optimization of free-range areas and for breeding purposes can be collected with a minimum input of labour and at relatively low costs using the WEPH.
