The objective of this study was to determine the effect of spraying oil in houses for broilers (floor housing) and layers (aviary system) on dust concentrations and emissions. The study was done in 5 identical rooms for broilers and 4 rooms with aviary systems for layers. In the broiler rooms rapeseed oil was sprayed at levels varying from 6-32 ml/m² at intervals of once every day and once every two days. In the layer rooms 20 ml oil per m² was sprayed daily. Concentrations and emissions of PM10 and PM2.5 were measured gravimetrically during 24 h. In broilers personal dust exposure was measured by the light scattering method and ammonia emissions were measured continuously with an NOx monitor. Daily gain, feed intake and footpad lesions were determined in broilers; egg production was determined in layers. Results in broilers showed a linear relationship between oil application rate and PM10 emission reduction, varying from 55-85% at oil application rates varying from 6-24 ml/m² per day. PM2.5 emission reduction was not related to application rate and was approx 80% for all treatments. Personal exposure to PM10 was reduced at similar levels as dust emission reduction. Dust emission reduction in layers was 34% for PM10 and 50% for PM2.5. Daily application of oil gave higher PM10 reductions than spraying once every two days. Ammonia emissions and production results were not affected by oil spraying. There was a higher risk of footpad lesions in broilers at the high oil application levels. It was concluded that oil spraying in bedding systems for broilers and layers is an effective method to reduce dust concentrations and emissions. The application rate should be limited to 16 ml/m² per day or less to prevent higher risk of footpad lesions.
