The aim of this paper is to investigate whether inline SCC assessment at quarter level has additional value above the combination of EC at quarter level and SCC at cow level for detection of clinical mastitis at quarter level. Two different gold standards are used: all visual abnormal milk or visual abnormal milk that has an elevated QSCC as well. Data was collected at three farms with an AMS. Five indicators were measured: two squirts (3^rd and 4^th) per quarter for visual observation, EC alerts per quarter from the AMS, inline SCC (iSCC) at quarter level, and laboratory determined quarter SCC (qSCC) and composite milking SCC (CSCC). Visual observations were categorized into normal (n=3,190) and abnormal (n=22). SCC was categorized in low and high, with thresholds set at 500 kcells/ml for quarter and 200 kcells/ml for composite milking values. Results from this study show that quarter level SCC assessment seems to be superior to cow level assessment with respect to the number of false positive alerts, resulting in a higher success rate when detecting clear cases of clinical mastitis. Differences in performance when compared to EC alone, however, could not be proven to be statistically significant. Some important issues with respect to determining sensor performance are discussed, like which gold standard, time window and performance criteria to use. Furthermore, some suggestions for improvement and potential ways of cost reduction are given.
