An increasing problem in modern livestock production is the maintenance of animal health due to the growing livestock in the farm stables and the rising performance of the animals, which is at least connected with loss of money. Alternatives for the time-consuming individual observation of each animal are i.e. the utilization of a pedometer or video-based arrangements. All these systems have one thing in common: they only compass one single parameter and thereby implicate a lack of precision. IASP developed a new methodology for animal monitoring in cooperation with different companies – especially to keep track of fertility and reproduction in cattle. The system is based on constant measurements of eight psycho-physiological parameters and behaviour parameters on animal skin. A neckband in which the sensor is implemented was created. The electrodes are newly developed coat-electrodes, which fix the sensor on the skin. The sensor conveys the parameters wireless to a receiver connected with a PC, but it also has a small data memory. With the developed method it will be able to identify two important states of female animals; firstly the point of ovulation for optimal insemination and secondly pregnancy. In addition farmers get simple information about the status of every animal in a traffic light principle by the software: with green – meaning everything is ok; yellow – observation is necessary; and red – call the veterinary. Additional information is available to the veterinary about every parameter, e.g. temperature.
