The justified use of injectable transponders, in the light of animal well being and food safety aspects, was studied. In an experiment 559 lambs at an age of about one month were injected with a glass encapsulated transponder (32×4 mm). Transponders were injected in neck, armpit, groin or abdomen. The application was carried out by two persons (farmer or vet). The person doing the application scored the easiness of application in 3 categories: easy, moderate, difficult. An observer scored the reaction of the animals during application in 4 categories: no, light, medium, strong. At a weight of about 30 kg the lambs were slaughtered. Once during the fattening period and at arrival in the slaughterhouse the presence of the transponder was checked by reading the ID number. The slaughter line position of the transponder recovery was recorded. The time needed for recovery was scored in 4 categories: <10, 10-30, 30-120, >120 s and the carcass damage was scored in 4 categories: no, light, medium, strong. Application in the groin was assessed as easiest, while abdomen and neck were hardest. The animal reaction during injection were strongest for neck and lowest for groin. The check during the fattening period showed losses of 9.0, 0.0, 6.6 and 15.7% for respectively groin, abdomen, neck and armpit, at the slaughterhouse losses were increased till respectively 10.0, 3.8, 8.3 and 17.4%. In the slaughtering process 50.0% of the transponders in the groin were removed from the carcass during skin removal and opening of the abdomen cavity. For the neck, armpit and abdomen these percentages were respectively 40.4, 13.0 and 5.0%. The other transponders mainly were further in the slaughter line recovered. Time needed for recovery was shortest for abdomen and groin and longest for armpit and neck. This was also caused by more cutting in the carcass necessary for the recovery of the transponder. In total 92.1% of the transponders were physically recovered. Losses in the slaughterhouse were caused because some transponders left the slaughter line with the head (neck transponders), the skin (groin and armpit transponders) and the abdominal content (abdomen transponders). There was a clear effect of the operators on almost all assessments (easiness of application, animal reaction during application, losses and recovery of transponders). Because of the low losses and simple recovery of the transponders application in the abdomen offers the best perspectives but further testing of the application procedures are necessary.
