The current german legislation defines limits for gaseous emissions and immisions such as dust particles emerging from animal houses in the context of accepted locations of growing farms. Therefore the aim of this project is to collect and characterize particles emitted from animal houses with a focus on free ventilated cow barns. These results will be included in a simulation model which is developed in this project. To describe the transmission of aerosols from animal houses it is necessary to know the relevant parameters of the particles. In this project the aerodynamic properties of dust like dynamic shape factor, specific gravity, particle concentration, particle mass and chemical composition were determined. For collecting dust an Andersen-Sampler was used which classifies the dust into eight fractions. The dust samples were analysed by microscope. A ‘horizontal sampler’ was used to collect dust in order to analyse the transmission parameters, such as sedimentation, resuspension and adsorption under laboratory conditions. Furthermore the dust has been analysed chemically to identify the main sources. For the quantitative analysis of emission mass flow from livestock buildings, it is essential to measure the concentration of the target substance in the exhaust and delivery air, in addition to the air volume flow. To measure air volume flow in naturally ventilated animal houses the SF₆ tracer gas decay method was used. The continuous measurement of dust concentration was realized by light scattering aerosol spectrometers. The results showed the expected high variability in the sedimentation velocity and the aerodynamic characteristics between the different particle size classes.
