Over the last decade an increasing number of automatic milking systems (AMS) have been adopted, especially in The Netherlands. The appraisal of this new technology in ethical terms appears to be a complex matter. Compared to a conventional milking parlour the use of an AMS entails in several respects a different practice of dairy farming, the ethical implications of which are not self evident. In this paper these potential implications are approached in terms of the co-evolution of technology and ethics. The approach starts from the assumption that ethics and technologies both are subject of change and that there is a relation of mutual influence. From this perspective it is argued that an AMS in a number of ways entails a different practice of dairy farming. Cows health and wellbeing are monitored to a large extent by means of data generated by the AMS management system, instead of in direct interaction during milking in a conventional system. There even is evidence that ethical criteria of cow welfare co-evolve with the new system and its behavioural implications. Furthermore the implications of AMS towards grazing are discussed. The AMS and the co-evolving ethical concerns can be regarded as part of a wider process of co-evolution of dairy technologies and ethical concerns on cow welfare, towards a more monitoring role for the farmer. Directions for further research on farming practices and ethical decision making are indicated.
