In the pre-market phase, vertical gene flow is framed as a biosafety issue in which ecological consequences of the escape of transgenes are assessed, whilst it is framed as a socio-economic issue of co-existing cropping systems in the post-market phase. While no adverse effects have been identified on the environment due to vertical gene flow from the transgenic maize event MON810, its cultivation is expected to impact on-farm management. To reduce the adventitious GM-input due to pollen flow in non-GM maize produce, isolation distances between GM and non-GM fields are imposed. Numerous studies show that isolation distances ranging between 10 and 50 m would be sufficient to keep the adventitious GMO content resulting from cross-fertilisation below the 0.9% labelling threshold in maize.
