Due to the ban on traditional battery cages in the EU egg producers have to change to another production system. The organic egg production system may be such an alternative. To assess the contribution to sustainable development of this production system economic, ecological and societal performance was quantified and analysed according to a formerly established method. Results were compared to other egg production systems studied before. Eleven organic laying hen farms were visited to collect data of the last flock in 2005. Regarding economic performance farm income per full time equivalent was computed. For ecological performance, a life cycle assessment was used to express the contribution of acidification, eutrophication, global warming, energy use, and land use. Regarding societal performance animal welfare and health as well as product quality were studied. Farm income and contribution to acidification and eutrophication was higher for organic egg producers compared to other egg production systems. Contribution to global warming and energy use, however, were lower for organic egg producers. No difference was found for land use. Animal welfare level was high as well as the use of anthelmintics in organic egg production. The compelled outdoor run affected these two indicators strongly. Variation was high between egg producers, but organic egg producers tended to have higher mortality levels and lower percentages of second grade eggs. Although organic egg production has a strong sustainability image, the results showed they do not contribute only positively to sustainable development. Improvements can be made especially regarding mortality and the contribution to acidification and eutrophication.
