There is a broadly shared idea that animals have some moral status and that inflicting unneccessary suffering to them is wrong but that this is compatible with keeping and killing them for food. The idea that animal husbandry is sanctioned when so-called welfare considerations are taken into account can not be supported by any plausible normative theory. Every plausible theory in the field of animal ethics comes to the conclusion that animal husbandry is not compatible with the moral status that animals are due. If a vegan agriculture is indeed the most animal-friendly option, it is important to check how it scores in terms of sustainability, because sustainability is another moral aim or prerequisit in relation to agriculture. I will argue that vegan agriculture is not only animal-friendly, but also sustainable.
