European husbandry systems for cattle are subjected to considerable changes: herd sizes are increasing; loose housing stables and outdoor husbandry systems replace tie stalls; farmers’ working time and organisation skills are particularly concerned due to the decrease in the number of workers on farm (e.g. less overlapping between generation) and due to the multi activity of the farmers. Numerous consequences occur through these changes that should be considered in the development of sustainable husbandry systems. What is often neglected is the conflict between the aim to keep up a high productivity level while saving time and the necessity of having enough time to properly watch and care for the animals and to build up a positive human-animal relationship. Our paper aims at highlighting this human factor when considering animal behaviour and welfare. Based on recent studies, our presentation will particularly discuss the consequences of a poor human-animal relationship in terms of animal welfare, human work and safety, as well as production. It will also present different research programs running in Europe that aim to develop practical solutions (farmers training, animal selection) to help farmers to solve occurring conflicts and to reach their targets. Regarding our understanding of the human-animal relationship, we will shortly discuss the need and the possible way to maintain a positive human-animal relationship, based on knowledge about animal behaviour, moral concerns and aspects of job satisfaction. By improving animal welfare, farmers’ safety and job satisfaction these programs can contribute to the sustainability of animal husbandry/agriculture in Europe.
