The search for simple and fast methods to be used routinely for the analysis of phycotoxins is one of the main interests of researchers working in the field of marine toxins. Electro-separation methods are usually fast and simple contributing to a reduction in the consumption of solvents as well as increasing efficiency when compared to other separation methods such as liquid chromatography. This work shows examples of the application of capillary electrophoresis for the analysis of phycotoxins such as yessotoxins and amnesic shellfish poisoning toxins. Capillary electrophoresis methods previously developed in our laboratory showed the potential of this technique for such applications. The present work was mainly focused on improving sensitivity, one of the main drawbacks associated with this technique, by optimising the electrophoretic conditions. Different modes of stacking with preconcentration have been applied leading to significant improvements in sensitivity. Capillary electrophoresis under these improved conditions showed potential for efficient determination of these toxins at concentrations below regulatory limits. This technique can be considered as the basis for alternative methods for the analysis of such phycotoxins.
