In 1986 and 1987 a series of meetings took place under the heading Processes of International Negotiations (PIN), organized by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, Laxenburg, Austria. The original idea was to find common elements in international negotiations. Gradually the project veered towards a series of case studies on particular negotiations. The present article endeavours to list factors under three headings: Inputs, Process, Output. The approach remains valid today, although any such schematized presentation must be handled with care, in as much as each particular negotiation has its own characteristics.
