Abstract

This chapter introduces the book as a hopeful offering intended to move forward the conversation toward social justice in teaching and teacher education. The chapter begins by framing the volume in relation to the first two volumes in the Self-Study and Diversity series. The 2006 volume sought to widen and deepen the developing conversation about diversity in the self-study community. The second volume in 2016 traced a history of self-studies addressing issues of diversity, increasingly by scholars who represented first languages other than English, and identities other than White male or female. In the current volume, the editors again advance work by minoritized teacher education scholars. Themes braided across many chapters include the particularly significant theme of “identity.” Many authors powerfully address the alienation from dominant cultures of racialized students, as well as calling for culturally situated and informed understandings (e.g., the needs of young dual language learners) and alternative cultures (e.g., Hip Hop), both in the United States and internationally (including two South African studies, two Icelandic studies, and studies by transnational immigrants). Readers are invited to try in their own classrooms some of the practices described in the book and, with critical humility and radical empathy, to act for equity and justice.
