Abstract

In this self-study the author examines his personal journey from being centered within the dynamics of the field of literacy education to a more culturally relevant practice of Hip Hop Literacy. Literacy Education emphasizes a “strong text,” exclusively written conception of literacy, while Hip Hop literacy not only included oral language, but a more collective engagement of text composition that included technology, performance, and marketing. This transition is explained through an examination of the intersections of written literacy, Black preaching, Black performance, Black music and Black literary activism. The author found that while literacy emphasized an individual engagement with exclusively written textual elements, Hip Hop Literacy required the engagement of an ecosystem of composition in which collective and distributed expertise allowed for the composition and recording of Hip Hop’s Literacy mediated music.
