Abstract

This narrative self-study expresses the transformation of a Japanese immigrant educator at an Icelandic preschool through metaphors. While investigating the concept of funds of knowledge, she recalled her interaction with María, a senior preschool educator who called herself “a toy,” who taught her the value of using personal resources at work. Data sources are a teaching journal, reflective short stories edited based on the journal, mindful walk transcript and the author’s master’s dissertation. Reflecting on the teaching journal and short stories, she explored her professional identity transformation by using metaphor of a boat on which she was the sailor. At first, the experience as a preschool educator was as fancy but fragile as an origami-made boat. The author looked well educated and well prepared, but did not have any flexibility to change her professional attitude from being Japanese. After her origami-made boat was sunk by great Icelandic children, she began to explore how she could reinforce her boat stronger with her resources. María inspired her to look into her Japanese resources and she rebuilt her boat by using her Japanese language and skills she gained in her past. After the boat was built stronger, she became aware of three important resources to support her sailing: theoretical, cultural, and human resources. She continues her sailing and now has tools to build the boat into whatever she desires with funds of knowledge.
