Abstract

This paper explores the author’s intersectional British Indian identity through three generations of her family, spanning over sixty years in Britain—from the experiences of grandparents and parents to the current generation. Karishma Patel presents anecdotes that trace her evolving identity formation and development as a minority ethnic woman, student, and teaching assistant. The analysis dissects, compares, and examines parallels and differences between various power structures and systems, highlighting their impact on the lived realities, significance, and nature of being British Indian and ethnic minority for her family and students. The reflection considers intrapersonal and interpersonal experiences related to immigration, assimilation, multiculturalism, family structures and marital practices, divorce, model minority culture, racial stratification, teachers’ ethnic-oriented perceptions, racial othering, white-washed curriculum and pursuing dreams later in life.
