Abstract

Through this critical reflection, Beatriz Ramirez examines racism in Mexico and the construction of the miscegenation myth, which has significantly shaped Mexican identities. While Mexico has perpetuated the idea that racial discrimination does not exist, everyday life in the country reveals how deeply normalised it has been for centuries. Since âwhitenessâ is associated with higher incomes, beauty and privilege, many individuals have developed strategies to claim a share of the promise of whitening as part of the miscegenation process. This text draws on the concept of âpassingâ to explore how navigating âwhitenessâ with ease is possible for some and analyses how the intersection of gender, âraceâ and class allowed the author certain privileges that are unfairly inaccessible to other nationals.
