Abstract

The essay is a reflective exploration of the author’s experiences as a Black girl navigating predominantly White educational spaces in the UK. Grounded in Critical Race Theory, it examines the systemic racism, colourism and identity struggles encountered from childhood to adulthood. The narrative delves into the lasting effects of societal and institutional biases, including early experiences of colourism, cultural isolation and the lack of representation in the curriculum. The author critiques the enduring impact of colonialism and racial hierarchies, emphasising how these shaped her self-perception and interactions within educational settings. She discusses her transition to becoming an educator, grappling with internalised expectations of Whiteness while striving to promote anti-racist practices and decolonise the curriculum. Ultimately, the essay advocates for critical reflection and systemic change, highlighting the complexities of racial identity and the need for inclusive education to address deeply entrenched inequities and spotlight marginalised voices.
