Abstract

Carlen’s racial background has never been a significant feature of her identity and has remained unaddressed until recently, which led to the question: Why did it take me 45 years to realize that I am an integral part of the white race and how my well-intentioned behaviour potentially perpetuated racism in education? With this question in mind, she searches for answers reflecting on memories as a pupil in a homogeneous village in Switzerland, as a college student in New York, as an educator in Switzerland, and as a parent in London. Furthermore, she uses theories of Bourdieu, Critical Race Theory, Critical Whiteness Studies and its predecessors such as W.E.B. DuBois and Frantz Fanon, to critically analyse how a Eurocentric curriculum undermines children from minority backgrounds and perpetuates whiteness.
