Abstract

Reflecting on her own experiences as a public school student in the U.K, the author explores the impact of the sexual harassment Black girls receive while wearing school uniforms as their bodies transition through adolescence to adulthood. Referencing social constructionism and Black feminism, the chapter provides a brief overview of current research into sexual harassment of Black girls, before moving into an exploration of the gendered pedagogy of school uniforms. In the fourth section, the author analyses how the sexualisation of uniforms interacts with the adultification of Black girls to create specific racialised sexual harassment. Finally, she considers the impact on Black women of normalised racialised sexual harassment during adolescence and identity formation.
