Abstract

The chapter discusses the impact of the pandemic on elections held in the Czech Republic in 2020 and 2021. These include the Senate by-elections, elections to the regional councils and 1/3 of the Senate, and the election to the Chamber of Deputies. While analyzing the research problem, the focus is on the organization and conduct of the elections, legal regulations defining new methods, precautions and voting techniques under the sanitary regime, as well as issues raised by the political parties during the election campaign, and election results. The scientific methods used include institutional and legal analysis, systemic analysis, decision-making, and historical analysis. Methods applied have proven that the COVID-19 pandemic affected the Czech electoral democracy and became a challenge to the decision-making process. The Czech government decided to hold elections during the pandemic and introduced stricter hygiene measures and alternative voting methods for citizens in quarantine.
