Abstract

The activity of populist parties is one of the features of liberal democracies in a state of crisis. Since 2008, populist groups have grown in strength that they had not had since the 1980s. A manifestation of their influence is the ability to independently govern or co-govern, among others, in many European Union countries. The pandemic that broke out in 2020 could, according to many analysts, change the party scenes and lead to an inhibition of the âpopulist marchâ. However, this did not happen. This chapter is an attempt to indicate the mechanisms of populist governance (especially in the political message layer) and the cause-and-effect relationships between the pandemic and populism. The adopted research hypothesis assumes that populists only briefly paused in their efforts to expand their influence, and then regain their position on political scenes, including widespread distrust of vaccinations in society (anti-vaccination movements). The elections during the pandemic time did not stop the populists from marching for power, but only led to a strengthening of the propaganda influence. To verify the hypothesis the author used a comparative method and content analysis.
