Abstract

In Bulgaria â similarly to other countries around the world - the conduct of the 2021 parliamentary elections scheduled for April 2021 was greatly impeded by the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis covers the evolution of the Bulgarian political scene in the period after 2020, which eventually led to the alternation of power, a key issue relating to the functioning of a democratic system. Socio-political developments in 2020 and then in 2021 were a direct expression of the growing public dissatisfaction with the actions of the government of B. Borisov, identified with all negative trends and phenomena that took place in Bulgaria during the period that coincided with the pandemic. Support for GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) â despite some decline â was fairly stable and represented a quarter of the electorate, while building a credible and stable alternative to the ruling political camp was a fundamental problem. A situation where only the third parliamentary election held within eight months leads to the formation of a stable government coalition is not common in democratic systems.
