Abstract

As in many other European countries, elections were held in 2020â2021 in the Principality of Lichtenstein using precautionary measures typical for the coronavirus pandemic period. It should be emphasized that the way elections were organized did not encounter any major hurdles. In what follows, the Principality of Lichtensteinâs voting system and its implementation during the pandemic will be discussed. In so doing, parliamentary elections as well as the modus operandi of referenda will be analyzed since both took place during the coronavirus pandemic, i.e. in 2020 and in the first half of 2021. The following research problems seem to be of key importance in this context: 1) how were voting procedures carried out during the pandemic? 2) what problems did these elections encounter? 3) what experiences from these elections could be useful for other countries? During the referendum and the parliamentary elections in February 2021, an alternative voting technique was applied in the form of postal voting. The solutions adopted in Liechtenstein are both useful and effective, especially with regard to extreme situations such as the pandemic. These strategies could be applied in many larger countries but this would require effective legal, information, and technical instruments to be developed.
