Abstract

The essay reflects on the intersectionality of race, class, and educational policy in the UK through the author’s personal journey as a Black student navigating the academisation of schools. The transformation of schools into a quasi-market system prioritized metrics over student well-being, exacerbating inequalities for marginalized students, particularly Black boys. Agyepong critiques systemic biases in disciplinary practices and teacher perceptions, which often label Black boys as disruptive, highlighting the importance of culturally responsive education and restorative justice to create equitable classrooms. The paper also explores the impact of socio-economic and cultural contexts, such as being a “latch-key kid,” in shaping identity and resilience while grappling with stereotypes and limited representation in educational institutions. Ultimately, the essay calls for a shift from market-driven models to holistic, inclusive policies, addressing unconscious biases and promoting equity to dismantle racial disparities in the education system.
