Ever since Singapore students achieved high performance in the TIMSS studies, there has been international interest in the Singapore mathematics curriculum and textbooks. The Singapore mathematics curriculum has undergone several changes from the 1950s to 2006 in line with national initiatives in education. Mathematics textbooks have been revised to reflect these changes, most recently in 2006. Taking an issue approach, we have chosen five out of many major changes in Singapore education and will discuss them in relation to school mathematics: ability grouping, a coherent curriculum framework focussing on mathematics problem solving, calculators and ICT use, alternative assessment, and incorporation of values into mathematics lessons. These issues are chosen because the ways Singapore has handled them might be of theoretical and practical interest to the international readers. The Singapore journey in mathematics education depicted in this chapter will hopefully bring about fruitful discussions and collaborative research among educators from Singapore and other countries.
