Hong Kong has its first mathematics curriculum, replacing its previous arithmetic curriculum, for primary schools in 1967. Innovations that originated from the Modern Mathematics reform were introduced into the secondary school mathematics in 1964 and Nuffield mathematics was incorporated into the primary mathematics curriculum, which was later revised in 1973. With all the controversies that sprung out from Modern Mathematics, the primary and secondary school mathematics curricula were restructured in 1983 and 1985 respectively. To address the various problems that arose from universal education, the Target Oriented Curriculum was advocated in the early 1990s, which brought about heated debates. The Ad hoc Committee on Holistic Review of the Mathematics Curriculum was set up in 1997 with its final report released in early 2000. The new secondary and primary mathematics curricula were published in 1999 and 2000 respectively along with the holistic review. Hong Kong launched a new wave of education reform in 1999, under which a new mathematics curriculum framework was put forth under the proposed new academic structure. In this chapter, not only will the development trend of the Hong Kong mathematics curriculum be delineated, the features of the new primary and secondary school mathematics curricula as well as the proposed mathematics curriculum framework will be portrayed. Finally, this chapter will also discuss the challenges that face the Hong Kong mathematics curriculum.
