Nutrient fortification of breast milk and preterm formula use in preterm infants is common in neonatal care. Allergic enterocolitis is one form of gastrointestinal manifestation in preterm neonates. It is predominantly associated with formula feeding and exposure to cow milk based fortifier in expressed breast milk. Milk protein enteropathy or allergic gastro enteropathy (milk protein associated gastrointestinal illness) shows a wide spectrum of clinical presentation among preterm infants during neonatal period and infancy. The presenting signs and symptoms of allergic enterocolitis often mimic more common diseases such as early-necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants. Formula-associated enterocolitis has a good prognosis and often resolves within a few days after elimination of the source of the cow’s milk protein.
