In order to describe the Italian alpaca population and establish the technical documents for the ITALPACA Association, a research on 153 adult animals, 47 male and 106 female, bred in 17 farms located in Centre and North Italy was carried out. No variation has been observed for skin colour, hoof colour, ears length and type, forehead and nose profile. Thirty one percent of the animals are full white, 69% pigmented. Thirty two percent are red with black extremities, 32% black, 18% wild, 10% reddish brown, 1% black and tan. Five percent of the animals present an unreadable pattern. Twenty nine animals are diluted or grey. Twenty percent of animals are spotted. Forty seven percent of animals are Huacaya, 8% Suri and 44% intermediate. Ninety four percent of the animals present an intermediate fleece extension, 5% of animals have fleece covering heads and legs and only 1% of animals have uncover heads, neck, legs and belly. Only the age affects significantly withers height, chest height and rump width. The measures are significantly positively correlated.
