Although camelids belong to the separate suborder Tylopoda within the order Artiodactyla, they are quite frequently misclassified as ruminants. There are many differences between camelids and ruminants. One is, for example, that they are quite resistant to many ruminant diseases, regulated by governmental laws. No special tests exist to diagnose ruminant diseases in camelids. For this reason tests are used which are usually applied for other species. In this study, altogether 9,391 tests of 2,546 llamas and alpacas were evaluated. The laboratories which provided these results were in Europe (Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, and Finland), the United States, Chile and Peru. This investigation concentrates on different laboratory tests for Brucellosis (2,535), Leucosis (1,499), BHV1 (1,619) and Tuberculosis (914). In addition, results on tests for other ruminant diseases in smaller amounts of animals are presented. The results of this study were negative in the majority of the diseases tested. Some of the tests were false-positive, for example 0.9% of the Brucellosis tests. Among the diseases which were tested in a smaller number of animals, some were false positive (e.g. BVD), and some positive tests for Leptospirosis were found.
