South American or New World camelids are increasingly important species outside of South America. Britain is home to the largest population of New World camelids in Europe, estimated at 4-5,000 individual llamas and 7-8,000 alpacas. Knowledge in the field of veterinary medicine gained on the more common species, the llama and the alpaca could be transferred to the less common ones, the guanaco and vicuña. As a result of increasing numbers of camelids referred, and the rising number of inquiries from private veterinary practitioners, a new residency in camelid medicine was created, thanks to a joint effort between the University of Bristol and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Trust. This paper provides a descriptive summary of clinical and surgical camelids cases (second opinion) referred to the Farm Animal Practice & Hospital of the University of Bristol, and the associated experience of first opinion cases as well as distance referrals.
