Abstract

Nature-based Solution (NbS) design has gained traction as an innovative and sustainable approach to urban water management. Still, gaps exist in our understanding of what NbS design might actually look like and how to explicitly link multidisciplinary approaches in assessing NbS form, function, and cost. As such, the objective of this chapter is to use a case study of the Khlong Mae Kha, Chiang Mai, Thailand, to illustrate the process through which NbS designs may be envisioned and the performance and costs assessed. Water quality in the Khlong Mae Kha has been problematic for more than four decades due to ongoing point and non-point source discharges, encroachment on the waterway by both informal housing and formal commercial and residential structures, inadequate or poor operation of existing drainage infrastructure, and complex policy and political relations. In exploring NbS options to improve water quality conditions, we linked students from Landscape Architecture at Thammasat University with Engineering students from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Specifically, a constructed wetland and park system was designed by the Landscape Architecture students to treat wastewater and stormwater runoff from the Muang Mai Market before discharge to Khlong Mae Kha. The design is also intended to enhance community wellbeing through better quality greenspace and connections with economic opportunities provided by the bridges and transportation corridors to local markets. The Engineering students subsequently modeled the drainage and wetland system, optimizing size and performance to meet Thailand’s effluent standards, as well as developing planning-level cost estimates.
