Abstract

Many aspects of urban character can be determined by its morphology or form, including its sustainability, microclimate, greenery, and environmental quality. Elements based on morphological characteristics, such as buildings, roads, and the like, how these elements are arranged, changes over time, in accordance with the higher demand for physical development due to urbanization. There is also interlinkage between urban form and the local climate. In general, the heat of the urban environment tends to increase with the more intense use of land, particularly by buildings and road surfaces, the loss of trees and other vegetative ground cover, and the higher CO₂ emission caused by transportation and industries. In turn, the severity of climate change’s impact on urban temperature will depend upon the design of the city, more specifically, its form. This paper discusses how climate and urban form are interlinked through a variety of urban processes. Various cases from previous research and general cases from various countries are detailed and aim to identify specific problems and propose some urban design and development concepts and policies.
