Abstract

Ockhamâs ontological program is reductionist in that it only admits of substances and qualities. It is supported by his semantic theory of connotation: relative terms, for instance, are analyzable as referring to nothing but particular substances and their particularized qualities in a certain way. This reductionist view has not been much discussed with respect to evaluative terms. This chapter focuses on the analysis of moral quality terms (âmorally goodâ), as applicable to different kinds of human acts, since these terms provide an interesting test case for Ockhamâs reductionist view. The chapter aims to show that his analysis of evaluative terms is consistent with his ontological reductionism. The analysis, though, comes at the price of a seemingly bold metaphysical claim, namely that all of the relevant aspects of a situation in which a person chooses to act are âobjectsâ of the act of choice but not of the ensuing action. The claim is less bold if it is interpreted against the backdrop of Ockhamâs radical ethical voluntarism according to which only choices, as acts of the will, are the primary bearers of moral goodness. It is argued that the metaphysical claim concerning the âobjectsâ of acts can be interpreted as indicating theâvery highâpsychological requirements for moral choices.
