Abstract

This article offers a detailed exegesis of the passages from different texts, written at different periods of Walter Burley’s life, where he discusses the signification of sentences. Against the various views of experts, I argue that Burley had one main theory, which he put forward both early and late in his career, although in one text alone he does not follow it. This main theory is one in which sentences signify hybrid items made up of things in the outside world and mental contents.
