Abstract

Among the many research interests of Mikko Yrjönsuuri are the problem of the free choice of the will and the active/passive nature of cognition. In my chapter, I aim at investigating how these two elements come together in the thought of Peter Olivi (c. 1248–1298), namely, whether passive accounts of cognition are compatible with a theory of a free will. I claim that Olivi argues not only for their compatibility but also that the freedom of the will can only be defended if grounded on a theory according to which all cognitive and volitional powers of the soul are active.
