Abstract

In Ibn á¹¬ufaylâs á¸¤ayy Ibn YaqáºÄn, a philosophical narrative that otherwise closely follows the presentation order of the late antique Aristotelian curriculum, the omission of any explicit teaching on logic and language captures the readerâs attention. This article argues that the omission is deliberate; that Ibn á¹¬ufayl has interesting things to say about the relationship between language and reasoning nonetheless; and that pursuing those interests can prise open one of the overlooked puzzles of the text, namely how á¸¤ayyâa boy who explicitly does not learn a language until the age of 50âon occasion appears to hold some kind of inner monologue. The answer turns out to hinge on a particular understanding of hypothetical reasoning and thought experiments.
