Abstract

In this chapter, Dorothée Boulanger and Andrzej Stuart-Thompson explore childhood, multilingualism, gender and inter-textuality in postcolonial Angolan literature, by connecting the boyhood ‘estórias’ of José Luandino Vieira (1935–) and Ondjaki (1977–). Mobilising childhood as a privileged site of agency, their narratives fuel resistance, dreams of nationalist emancipation, and ultimately nostalgia, in the anticolonial struggle for liberation from the 1960s to today. Highlighting the continuous associations in his texts between childhood and irreverence, creativity and freedom, we consider how Ondjaki’s poetic prose recalls the linguistic inventiveness of Luandino.
