Abstract

The chapter by Malyn Newitt concerns an unusual narrative of east Africa, written in the seventeenth century by the hand of a Jesuit. AntÃ³nio Gomes SJ, who recorded the voices of Africans. Intertwined with personal narratives of east Africaâs rich resources of gold, flora and fauna, this chapter reveals the complexity of east African culture and its rationality seen through the local lensâa rare narrative which stands out in an era with accounts that portray European Jesuit prejudices. Although not one of the major Jesuit texts of the period, Gomesâs account of the people of eastern Africa, their culture and their ideas fits into the wider picture of Jesuit attempts to understand and interpret the non-European world.
