Abstract

In this chapter, based on studies carried out in Labovian Variationist Sociolinguistics (Labov, 1972, 2003), the authors (Silvia Figueiredo BrandÃ£o and Silvia Rodrigues Vieira) focus on the Portuguese of Brazil (PB) with the main objective of demonstrating that its different features make it possible to conceive of it from different perspectives, supposedly related to the complexity of its social history, in which several indigenous and African languages intertwined with Portuguese. These were crucial in shaping the heterogeneity and plurality of norms observed today and also in past times. In this sense, plural features from the set of varieties of the Portuguese of Brazil are prioritised, which, according to the concept of linguistic variational continua and the concepts of gradual features and discontinuous features proposed by Bortoni-Ricardo (2004, 2005 and 2021), can be distributed along imaginary lines across regional (diatopic), social (diastratic) and stylistic (diaphasic and diamesic levels) axes. To exemplify how a symbiosis of norms occurs, two morphosyntactic phenomena were selectedâagreement (nominal and verbal) and the expression of the third-person anaphoric objectâin order to demonstrate the features of PB primarily in a continuum related to the diastratic/diatopic axis and, secondly, in an orality-literacy continuum. Finally, the possibility of three interpretations regarding the status of PB are considered: (a) PB as singular, in contrast to European Portuguese (PE), considering the most prominent characteristics that oppose the two varieties; (b) PB as two-fold, depending on the behaviour of variables at the extreme poles of the continua of linguistic variation (standard PB versus popular PB), which reflect the historical and social constitution of the country, the move from an eminently rural Brazil towards an eminently urban Brazil; (c) PB as multiple, according to increasing rates of greater or lesser geographical urbanity/isolation, or sociocultural and economic division; of greater or lesser orality/literacy; greater or lesser control over style.
